Who Has To Take SC Alcohol Server Training

01
Who Has To Take It
SC H.3430 / § 61-3-110 ↗

Under SC Code § 61-3-110, any employee who serves, handles, sells, or oversees the sale of alcohol at a licensed establishment in South Carolina must complete an approved alcohol server training course. This applies to full-time, part-time, and temporary workers.

▸ Servers ▸ Bartenders
▸ Sommeliers ▸ Managers
▸ Room Service Staff ▸ Catering & Events Staff
▸ Anyone who checks ID as part of their role
✕ BOH / Kitchen Staff — exempt if no alcohol service

Not sure? If you hand someone a drink, present a wine list, or check an ID as part of your job — you are covered. The fine for working uncertified falls on you personally, not just your employer.

SC establishments that exceed basic compliance can reduce their required minimum liability coverage through mitigation credits. The baseline required coverage is $1,000,000. Here is how far you can bring that down.

Measure Coverage Impact
Baseline Required CoverageMandatory for all licensed SC alcohol establishments since the 2017 Dram Shop Bill $1,000,000
Full Staff CertificationEvery covered employee completes approved training −$100,000
Stop Alcohol Service at MidnightEstablishment cuts off alcohol sales by midnight −$200,000

Minimum Floor — All Credits Applied $300,000

Bottom line for your boss: A fully certified staff is worth $100,000 off their insurance requirement. That is why establishments that pay for your training and compensate you for your time are making a smart business decision — not just a generous one.

SC Alcohol Training Repayment Clause § 61-3-120

07
The Repayment Clause
§ 61-3-120(C) ↗
SC Code § 61-3-120(C) — What It Says

If your employer pays for your alcohol server training and you leave — for any reason, including being fired — within six months of completing the course, your employer is legally permitted to require you to reimburse them for the cost of training.

Yes, that includes if they fire you.

This does not mean they will enforce it. But the legal right exists under SC law. Before your employer pays, ask whether there is a repayment agreement in writing and what the exact conditions are.

Practical takeaway: If your employer pays and you are thinking about leaving — or if things are going sideways at work — know this clause exists. It will not always be enforced, but it can be.

ServSafe Guardian Browser Requirements and Issues

08
The Guardian Browser
⚠ Required Software for the ServSafe Exam

ServSafe requires you to download Guardian Browser — a locked-down browser designed to prevent cheating during the proctored exam. It disables other applications, monitors your screen, and requires camera access the entire time you are testing.

Common issues reported:
— Conflicts with VPNs and certain antivirus software
— Camera not being recognized on some systems
— Browser not launching on older operating systems
— Session timeouts that require restarting the exam

Before exam day: Run the compatibility check on ServSafe’s site, close all other applications, disable your VPN, and make sure your camera works. Do not attempt the exam on a work computer that may have restricted software permissions.
